Recently read this article as it was passed around by my colleagues. Hope this particular line stuck with them: "Also, teachers often punish children by taking away recess privileges. That strikes Dr. Barros as illogical."
In my opinion it's idiotic. I say play away.
PS. First time reading the blog.

Interesting article. It all makes intuitive sense, but it seems that we need the pendulum to swing too far to one side to let us know what we and our little ones are missing.

Seriously? Well first and foremost, California law prohibits arranged marriage where one or both of the parties have been coerced. Secondly the girl is 14 years old and the age of consent is 18 (even the age limit on parent approved marriage is 16). Lastly, the fact that he included beer as a part of the dowry is pretty deplorable in my opinion. But maybe that's just me...

Just sounds like an arranged marriage with a dowry involved. Not sure I see the news, but like your points about the draft choice.

great blog!! I think each child is as individual as a snowflake. Some children need a little extra guidance. Some you would trust using a subway. Some you can't trust alone for two minutes.

My dad trusted me to stay at home when i was younger than 11 with my sister (1 1/2 years younger than me) from the time we got home until school until he came home from work.

He also trusted me to take the City bus wherever I wanted during the summer when I was a teenager. Sometimes his judgement was better at times than others, but I definately believe in letting our children go a little every day.

My son will always have opportunites to learn on his own. Im going to base it on his ability to make decisions, but I also think he will learn how to make decisions just from being able to.

Glad I found your blog, and here's to your continued contributions!!!
